GOAL was selected in recognition of its expert, robust and agile in-house legal counsel.

At an event recently in Dublin, hosted by Matheson LLP, GOAL, along with other distinguished and influential in-house legal teams, was honoured to be awarded inclusion in the inaugural GC Powerlist: Ireland Teams 2023 publication. The Legal 500, GC (General Counsel) Powerlist is designed to acknowledge and highlight the leading GCs and legal teams in the country and promote work being done by in-house counsel from a global perspective.

Every year the Legal 500 GC Power List organisation, based in London, invites law firm partners and in-house counsel to nominate in-house lawyers that have been instrumental in driving their organisations and businesses forward. In-house lawyers are especially recognized for changing or forming commercial opinions; developing outstanding technical solutions to complex issues; creating innovative structures to ensure that the in-house legal function is supporting and driving the business; and providing business working models that other in-house counsel can follow.

Recognized for proficiency, agility, and responsiveness

Speaking about inclusion in the Legal 500, GC Powerlist for Ireland, Alison Mitchell, General Counsel and Assistant Company Secretary, GOAL, said: “Given the nature and scale of GOAL’s global humanitarian work, across 14 countries of operation, the output of our governance, legal, and compliance functions, working closely with our colleagues in all departments, has a significant impact on the operational success of the organisation and the ability of our external stakeholders and local communities to have full confidence in us.”

“As a case in point, last February, GOAL responded to the devastating earthquakes, across 400 km of destruction, in Türkiye and NW Syria. While GOAL has supported vulnerable communities in those fragile countries for over 12 years, the scale of this emergency required GOAL to pivot its operations, while handling an extremely busy period of commercial contracting, increased governance and donor compliance obligations, and integration of new local laws into local operations,” continued Alison Mitchell.

Also commenting on the inclusion in the Legal 500, GC Powerlist for Ireland, Siobhan Walsh, CEO of GOAL, said: “Following several significant global events that have happened in the last year, we have seen significant changes in political and governance landscapes, necessitating GOAL’s legal team and our compliance functions to readily understand and ensure compliance with new legislative changes. Given the ever-changing and unpredictable nature of this context, this will remain a constant challenge for our in-house legal team. However, this recognition of the team’s strength, proficiency, agility, and responsiveness is very well deserved.” continued Siobhan Walsh.

Alison Mitchell concluded, “On behalf of GOAL Legal, I would like to acknowledge all those who contribute and work with us, especially those providing pro bono legal advice and support. Without this valued contribution, we would not be able to meet the needs of our organisation in the way that we do.”

Since the launch of the Legal 500 Powerlist in 2013, 3,000 individuals, 2,000 teams and 100+ law firms have been recognized for inclusion in 38 regions and countries across the world (also known as jurisdictional lists).
